Homosporous
Plants that produce only one kind of spore.
Heterosporous
Plants that produce two types of spores: microspores and megaspores.
Sporophyte
The diploid phase of the plant life cycle, which produces spores.
Gametophyte
The haploid phase of the plant life cycle, which produces gametes.
Strobilus
A cluster of sporangia, found in some plants.
Spores
Reproductive units of certain plants, capable of developing into a new organism.
Microsporangium
A structure that produces microspores, leading to male gametophytes.
Megasporangium
A structure that produces megaspores, leading to female gametophytes.
Exosporic
Referring to gametophytes that develop and emerge from the spore wall.
Endosporic
Referring to gametophytes that develop within the spore wall.
Pterophyte
An outdated term formerly used to refer to ferns and their relatives.
Eusporangiate
Sporangia arising from multiple epidermal cells, characteristic of some ferns.
Leptosporangiate
Sporangia that arise from a single epidermal cell, typical of true ferns.
Sori
Clusters of sporangia on the underside of fern leaves.
Indusium
A membranous structure covering sorus in some ferns.
Prothallus
A free-living gametophyte of ferns.
Rhizome
An underground stem that produces roots and shoots.
Microphyll
Leaves with a single vascular trace, characteristic of lycopods.
Megaphyll
Broad leaves with multiple vascular traces, typical of ferns.
