14 CFR 61.133
Regulation allowing a commercial pilot to act as PIC of an aircraft carrying persons or property for compensation or hire.
Commercial certificate limitations
A certificate does not authorize operation of a commercial business requiring an operating certificate under Parts 119, 121, 125, or 135.
Legal commercial operation
Must determine the nature of the operation, whether compensation is involved, and if Part 119 applies.
Instrument rating limitation
Limits carriage of passengers at night or on cross-country flights over 50 NM without an instrument rating in the same category and class.
Second-class medical requirements
At least a second-class medical is required to exercise commercial pilot privileges.
Medical duration
A second-class medical lasts twelve calendar months after the month of examination.
Post-expiration medical privileges
Medical does not become worthless; it drops to third-class privileges if remaining duration applies.
Required documentation during flight
Must have appropriate pilot certificate, photo ID, and required medical documentation accessible.
Pre-flight familiarity requirements (91.103)
PIC must be familiar with all available information concerning the flight, including weather and fuel requirements.
Operating certificate necessity
Analyze operation under Part 119 to determine if an operating certificate is required.
Exception for aerial work
Aerial photography, crop dusting, banner towing are specifically excepted from Part 119.
Aerial surveillance company operation
If the operation is for aerial photography or powerline patrol, it may not require a Part 119 operating certificate.
Transportation of personnel requirement
Advertising transportation indicates possible drift into operations requiring Part 119 compliance.
Nonstop commercial air tour exception (119.1(e)(2))
Certain nonstop air tours are excepted when conditions regarding distance and type of aircraft are met.
Commercial pilot responsibilities with wake turbulence
Pilot must actively avoid wake turbulence; ATC advisories assist but do not replace this duty.
Definition of meteorological conditions
Current weather conditions include METARs, TAFs, PIREPs, and radar information.
VFR fuel requirements (91.151)
Enough fuel to reach the first point of intended landing and then at least 30 minutes more by day or 45 minutes by night.
Non-negotiable terrain study
Route legality alone is insufficient; terrain, weather, and conditions must also be assessed in planning.
Small temperature-dew point spread warning
Indicates higher relative humidity and increased potential for cloud, fog, or reduced visibility.
Night blind spot
The center of the eye is less effective in dim light; objects are better detected by scanning off-center.
Hypoxia types
Four types: hypoxic, hypemic, stagnant, and histotoxic hypoxia.
Hyperventilation correction
Consciously slow breathing to restore normal breathing patterns.
Autokinesis effect
A stationary light may appear to move if stared at for several seconds at night.
Spatial disorientation
False perception of attitude, altitude, or motion resulting from conflicting sensory information.
External pressures definition
Outside forces that push a pilot toward a poor decision, prioritizing completion over safety.
Active risk management
Evaluate risk factors and operational reserves carefully for safe and legal flight decisions.
