The variety of natural and cultural attractions in the region.
The GDA offers a large variety of cultural and natural attractions, which appeals to all age groups, young to old. This has been a major factor in the development of the successful tourism industry in this region.
The Ancient East Initiative
The Ancient East Initiative, launched in 2016, was modelled on the Wild Atlantic Way and aimed to increase tourism to historical heritage sites. This initiative has been incredibly successful.
County Meath
This region has many historical sites. Co. Meath is known as Ireland’s heritage capital. It is rich in history, with castle ruins like Trim castle, ancient stone circles, and early Christian churches.
Newgrange
Newgrange in county Meath is a world heritage site which dates back to 3200BC. This is a huge attraction feature in Co. Meath, with over 200,000 visitors annually.
County Wicklow
County Wicklow, known as the Garden of Ireland, offers 83km of hills and mountain walkways, with scenic attractions such as Powerscourt and Glendalough.
Dublin city
Dublin city boasts a wealth of culture and history. It has historic locations from significant events in Irish history, for example the GPO in relation to the 1916 Easter Rising, and hosts national treasure, like the Book of Kells in Trinity.
Dublin city young age group
Dublin city also caters for a younger tourist age group, with many famous bars, e.g. Temple Bar, clubs, and live events.
Sporting events
Sporting events such as GAA in Croke Park, and rugby and international soccer matches in the Aviva stadium also attract domestic and foreign tourists, which further increases tourism.
Transport infrastructure in GDA
The GDA has a well-developed transport network. This allows quick, easy, and cheaper access to the region, which has been a major factor in the success of tourism in the region.
Dublin Airport
The region is home to Ireland’s main international airport. Terminals one and two in Dublin Airport can now carry over 30 million passengers annually. This promotes tourism in the GDA specifically, with a large number of tourists using the GDA as a ‘city break’.
Ports in GDA
Ferry passengers use Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ports, which allows visitors quick and easy access to this region. This caters for tourists who wish to bring their car and drive around the region.
Road and rail to Dublin
Dublin is a route focus of all road and rail network, meaning tourists do not have to hire a car. They can use public transport to access many, if not most, of Ireland’s cultural attractions while remaining based in the GDA.
Public transport in the GDA
The Luas, Dart, and Dublin Bus are all methods of public transport which has made the region easily accessible for tourists. Dublin’s rent-a-bike scheme has been a huge success for environmentally aware visitors.
