Ionization Energy
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom.
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract electrons when the atom is in a compound.
Metallic Character
Refers to the level an atom behaves like a metal.
Atomic Radius
One-half the distance between the nuclei of two atoms of the same element when atoms are joined.
Electron Affinity
The amount of energy released when an atom gains an electron.
Cation
A positively charged ion.
Anion
A negatively charged ion.
Ionic Bonding
The electrostatic interaction between metal (cation) and non-metal (anion) due to opposite charges.
Octet Rule
When forming compounds, atoms tend to achieve the electron configuration of noble gases.
Ionic Compounds
Compounds formed from two charged species, typically a metal and a non-metal.
