Forest Ecosystem
A complex ecological system with various layers including the canopy, subcanopy, and understory.
Canopy
The upper level of a forest formed by the tops of trees.
Subcanopy
The middle portion of the forest beneath the crowns of the taller trees.
Understory
The shaded region of a forest that includes shrubs, small trees, and groundcover.
Ecosystem Services
Benefits provided by forests including soil stability, oxygen production, carbon storage, water purification, and biodiversity support.
Deforestation
The large-scale removal of forest cover, particularly prevalent in developing nations.
Forest Fragmentation
The process of forests being divided into smaller patches due to land clearing for logging, agriculture, or urban development.
Edge Effects
Ecological phenomena that occur at the boundary between two ecosystems, where external influences impact the interior of the forest.
Clear-cutting
A timber harvesting method where all trees in an area are cut down, known for its cost-efficiency and severe ecological impact.
Selection Method
A timber harvesting method where widely-spaced trees are cut singly or in small patches, being the most expensive method with higher safety risks.
Prescribed Fires
Controlled burns used to manage forest health, nourish soil, and stimulate the growth of fire-adapted species.
Climate Change Effects
Warmer and drier weather conditions leading to more frequent and hotter fires, as well as increases in pest insect populations.
Sustainable Solutions
Conservation efforts such as national parks, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, and biosphere reserves aimed at protecting forest ecosystems.
