Biological parent
Parent who contributes genetic material as a result of sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technologies.
Social Parent
An individual who has parental responsibilities for a child they do not share a genetic relationship with.
Carer
An individual who formally or informally provides ongoing personal care to a dependant.
Dependant
An individual who is under the care of someone
Fostering
An alternative living arrangement for vulnerable children and young people whose parents are temporarily unable to care for them.
Adoption
The legal process of permanently transferring all legal parenting rights and responsibilities from birth parents to adoptive parents.
Surrogacy
An arrangement of taking an embryo and sperm then fertilising the egg and placing it in a woman to carry the baby.
Step-parent
A parent that marries or forms a de-facto relationship with a partner who has children from a previous relationship
