Emergency Assessment

Comprehensive Assessment
A detailed health history and physical examination of all body systems, usually done on admission to a hospital or at the start of care in a primary setting
Example: A patient admitted to the hospital for elective surgery undergoes a comprehensive assessment, including past medical history, current medications, and a full physical exam to identify any potential risks
Focused Assessment
An abbreviated health history and examination used to evaluate the status of previously identified problems or monitor new symptoms
Example: A patient with a known history of abdominal pain visits the clinic with increased discomfort. The nurse performs a focused assessment on the abdomen to determine the cause of pain
