Le Chatelier’s Principle
states that if a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in temperature, pressure,or concentration of reactants of products, the system will adjust to counteract that change and restore a new equilibrium.
Types Of Stresses
1-Change in concentration
2-Change in Temperature
3-Change in pressure (gases only)
4-Addition of catalyst (does NOT shift equilibrium)
Stress:Concentration
Increase reactants—--> shift right (towards products)
Increase product—— >shift left (towards reactants)
PRACTICE QUESTION
If more reactant is added to a system, what happens?
ANSWER FOR QUESTION #1
The reactant shifts towards the product
PRACTICE QUESTION #2
2- If more product is added to a system, what happens?
ANSWER FOR QUESTION #2
The reactant will shift towards the product
REACTANT AND PRODUCTS
(REACTANTS) 2H² + O² —> (PRODUCTS) 2H²O
EXAMPLE PROBLEM
C+H2——> CH$
1-What happens to the equilibrium if the concentration of C is increased
2-What happens to the equilibrium if the concentration of CH4 is decreased
ANSWER FOR EXAMPLE PROBLEMS
1- It will shift to the right (towards the
