Risk factors for HIV

• anal/vaginal sex w/o condom

• having another STI 

• sharing contaminated needles, syringes, and or injecting equipment and solutions when injecting drugs 

• receiving unsafe injections, blood transfusions, and tissue transplantation 

• medical procedures that involve unsterile cutting or piercing 

ART

does not cure HIV infection but suppresses viral replication within a person’s body and allows an individual’s immune system’s strengthen and regain the capacity to fight off infections 

• can prevent HIV transmission from mothers to newborns during breastfeeding

Virological tests

tests to detect viral nucleic acid (HIV DNA/RNA or total nucleic acid)

Serological testing 

identifies HIV antigen/ antibody generates as part of the immune response to infection with HIV
