Maintenance rehearsal
means repeating the information over and over again
If you are not interrupted information in STM will stay there indefinitely.
Maintenance rehearsal does not:
add meaning to information
link information to other information in LTM
transfer information from STM to LTM
ELABORATIVE REHEARSAL (the better rehearsal)
a process by which we give meaning to information and link it to other information already in LTM
this allows us to process the concepts on a deeper level (semantically) and info will move from STM to LTM
e.g. using mnemonics or remembering a word because it sounds like something else
Limits of STM compared to LTM or Sensory:
limited to 7+/- 2 chunks
only lasts for 12-30 seconds provided there is no interference
How to retain info in the STM
To retain info in STM we can do something known as maintenance rehearsal.
