  • add meaning to information

  • link information to other information in LTM

  • transfer information from STM to LTM

ELABORATIVE REHEARSAL (the better rehearsal)

  • a process by which we give meaning to information and link it to other information already in LTM

  • this allows us to process the concepts on a deeper level (semantically) and info will move from STM to LTM

  • e.g. using mnemonics or remembering a word because it sounds like something else

Limits of STM compared to LTM or Sensory:

  • limited to 7+/- 2 chunks

  • only lasts for 12-30 seconds provided there is no interference

How to retain info in the STM

To retain info in STM we can do something known as maintenance rehearsal.
