What is Chemistry?
The study of the composition, properties, and interactions of matter.
Define a Hypothesis in Chemistry.
A tentative explanation of observations.
What is the Law of Conservation of Matter?
States that there is no detectable change in the total quantity of matter present when it converts from one type to another.
What is the difference between Mass and Weight?
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter, while weight refers to the force that gravity exerts on an object.
What are Elements?
Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes.
What are Compounds?
Pure substances that can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes, consisting of two or more types of elements chemically bonded.
Define a Mixture.
Composed of two or more types of matter that can be present in varying amounts and can be separated by physical changes.
What is a Homogeneous Mixture?
A mixture that exhibits uniform composition and appears visually the same throughout.
What is a Heterogeneous Mixture?
A mixture that has a composition that varies from point to point.
What is an Atom?
The smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element and can enter into a chemical combination.
What is a Molecule?
Consists of two or more atoms connected by strong forces known as chemical bonds.
Define a Physical Property.
A characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition.
What is a Physical Change?
A change in the state or properties of matter without any change in its chemical composition.
Define a Chemical Property.
The change of one type of matter into another type of matter.
What is an Extensive Property?
A property that depends on the amount of matter present.
What is an Intensive Property?
A property that does not depend on the amount of matter present.
What does Density measure?
The ratio of mass to volume.
What is a Pure Substance?
A substance with a constant composition.
