What does the urinary system do?
Filters notorious waste from blood and helps regulate water, electrolyte, & acid base balance
Main organ of urinary system is?
Kidneys, filter blood, regulates blood volume, & chemical makeup
Nephrons
Structural functional units of kidneys that are responsible for making urine; nitrogenous waste (urea/uric acid) are filtered out and excreted as urine kidney makes 1-1.8 liters of urine per day
Ureters
2 slender tubes that run from kidneys to urinary bladder. Smooth muscles propel urine by peristalsis
Urinary bladder
Muscular sac that stores urine. Made of smooth muscle & contains transitional epithelial tissue that can stretch which allows its wall to expand
Urethra
Thin walled tube that carries urine by peristalsis from bladder to outside of body. Urethra contains sphincters that keep urethra closed that can be controled voluntarily
