Statistics
A numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a sample.
Quantitative Data
Data consisting of numbers representing counts or measurements.
Categorical Data (Qualitative)
Data consisting of names or labels that do not represent counts or measurements.
Discrete Data
Quantitative data values that are finite or countable, such as the number of kids in a household.
Continuous Data
Quantitative data values that have infinitely many possibilities and are not countable, such as height and weight.
Nominal Level of Measurement
Data that consists only of categories and cannot be arranged in order, e.g., gender or color.
Ordinal Level of Measurement
Data that can be ordered but where differences between values are not meaningful, e.g., course grades.
Interval Level of Measurement
Data that can be ordered and where differences are meaningful, but with no natural zero, e.g., temperature.
Ratio Level of Measurement
Data that can be ordered, differences are meaningful, and has a natural zero, e.g., weight and height.
