What is a scale factor?
A ratio to two corresponding sides of identical figures. A scale factor is 3 means that the image is three times larger than the original.
Note: scaled factor greater than 1 means enlargement
scaled factor less than 1 means reduction
A ratio
A relationship of two numbers by division
Scaled copy:
Same shaped but possibly different size from the original.
Dilation
A transformation that enlarges or reduces the size of an original figure.
Dilation notation
D(k,c) D is the dilation, k is the scale factor and c is the center
Coordinate rule
When applying a dilation to a point (x,y) with scale factor “k” centered at the origin, the new coordinates become (kx,ky)
