Personification
Giving life or human qualities to objects (e.g., The wind whispered).
Imagery
Sensory description that paints a picture (e.g., cold, cracked hands).
Tone
The author's attitude toward the subject.
Allegory
A symbolic representation (e.g., The blindfold figure with scales).
Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonants in a phrase (e.g., Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers).
Allusion
A reference to a famous person or event in literature (e.g., She is as pretty as the Mona Lisa!).
Analogy
A comparison of two pairs that have the same relationship.
Hyperbole
A figure of speech that involves exaggeration.
Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to be another (e.g., The cat's eyes were jewels, gleaming in the darkness).
Onomatopoeia
The use of words to imitate the sounds they describe (e.g., The burning wood crackled and hissed).
Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear together (e.g., bittersweet, jumbo shrimp).
Pun
A word that has two meanings at the same time, often resulting in humor.
Mood
The emotional atmosphere of a piece of literature.
Climax
The turning point or most intense moment in a story.
Protagonist
The main character in a story, often facing conflict.
Antagonist
The character or force that opposes the protagonist.
Underlying message
The deeper meaning or theme of a poem or story.
