What is the Different Types of Sustainable Tourism Methods?
Ecotourism
Community Based Tourism
Pro Poor Tourism
What is the aim of Eco-tourism?
The aim is to educate and increase people’s awareness of the impacts that we have on the environment and to also implement and enforce laws through the hiring of park rangers.
What are the two examples used for Eco-Tourism?
For example, the Galapagos Island actually limits the number of the visitors that the attraction takes in, and also charges an entrance fee of US$100 which is used to invest in the upkeep of the park or use to educate students on the environment.
Another example is Tiger Tops Elephant Camp, where people can view Elephants roaming freely in the habitat in their natural behavior. The revenue generated from tourists visiting the attraction is used to upkeep the animals in the camp and in the plans of educating people on the environment.
What are the limitations of Eco-Tourism?
When the attraction becomes too popular, ecotourism no longer works as effectively. For example, when Galapagos Island rose in popularity, it caused soil erosion in the area, and authorities were uncertain if they should continue eco-tourism.
Uncertainty of employing Local Communities. For example, in a country, the locals may not be as skilled as other park rangers from other countries, as they may lack certain skills. Hence, the government may not choose to hire locals, causing more economic leakages.
What is the aim of Community Based Tourism?
The aim is to educate and encourage people to take part in decision-making as locals have better knowledge on how to satisfy and accommodate to economic, social and environmental needs.
It is also to reduce economic leakages in the country and put in place measures to ensure locals benefit from tourism.
To educate and increase people’s appreciation for the environment and different cultures.
What are some examples of CBT?
For example, the Thanh Ha Pottery Village, where locals in the area help to teach tourists how to make certain pottery items, allowing and attracting people to experience their culture, while also allowing the locals to earn money directly from their services.
Another example, is the Traditional Homestays offered in Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, allowing tourists to stay with a local host family, to participate in their daily life activities, allowing them to experience, as well as appreciate the culture and the environment there.
another examples can include reducing economic leakages, as well as providing education and other things.
What are some of the limitations of CBT?
Community-Based Tourism can result in Loss of Culture due to Commodification. One example is in Kyrgzrstan where due to tourism, traditional yurts have been modified by adding furnishing into the yurts in order to attract and accommodate to the needs of tourists
Community-Based Tourism can be met with competition. For example, in Thanh Ha Pottery Village, where people can learn how to make pottery. They are facing competition from more established areas with more attractive artisans in Central Vietnam, causing money to go to areas where it can cause economic leakages in the country.
What is the aim of Pro-Poor Tourism? and what is their “approach”?
To reduce the income and economic gap between the poor and the wealthy in countries.
Their approach is to provide training and upskilling to locals, so that they can get more jobs and employments. they can also provide Micro-financing to encourage locals to take up temporary loans to open up their own businesses to make income.
What is the example for Pro-Poor Tourism?
For example, in China, The Three Parallel Regions, which is a World Natural Heritage Site, attracts people with their scenic views and for people who want to experience Village Life. With micro-financing, locals are setting up businesses, cultural performances and homestays for tourists.
What are the Limitations of PPT?
Not having access to micro-finance. People in poverty may not be able to get their application for a loan approved, as banks believe that people with a stable income are more reliable in repaying loans.
People may not want to upskill themselves, as they lack the self-confidence and do not see a future in it after upskilling. People may also be reluctant as some upskilling courses also have an entrance fee, and they may not have the means to pay for it. (Example: Iran’s PPT Project)
