Plant development
The combined result of growth, morphogenesis, and differentiation.
Open development
Describes how plants continue to produce new organs throughout life from meristems.
Shoot Apical Meristem (SAM)
Maintains stem-cell identity while initiating new leaves and floral organs.
Annual growth rings
Visible in tree trunks due to seasonal changes altering the activity of the vascular cambium.
Polarity in embryogenesis
Established first by the asymmetric division of the zygote into apical and basal cells.
Vascular system differentiation
The procambium differentiates into the plant's vascular system.
Root cap
The protective structure covering the root apical meristem as it pushes through the soil.
ABC model of floral development
States that B- and C-class genes together specify the identity of stamens.
First structure to emerge from a germinating seed
The radicle.
