What is the external anatomy of the eye?
The eye is covered with an eyelid that meets the corners of the eye at the medial commissure and the lateral commissure and is lined with eyelashes.
What are the medial commissure and lateral commissure?
The corners of the eye where the eyelids meet. The medial commissure is the inner corner (near the nose), and the lateral commissure is the outer corner.
What is the conjunctiva?
A thin membrane that covers the surface of the eyeball and the inner layer of the eyelid. It secretes mucus to lubricate the eye.
What is the function of the conjunctiva?
It secretes mucus to lubricate the eye.
What is the lacrimal apparatus?
A group of structures that lubricate the eye.
What do the lacrimal glands do?
Lacrimal glands above the eye constantly release tears to cleanse and moisten the eye.
What substances are found in tears?
Tears contain mucus, antibodies, and lysozyme (an antibacterial enzyme).
What is the function of lysozyme in tears?
Lysozyme is an antibacterial enzyme that helps protect the eye from infection.
What is the pathway of tears after they lubricate the eye?
Tears drain into ducts called the lacrimal canaliculi, then into the lacrimal sac, and finally into the nasal cavity through the nasolacrimal duct.
What happens to tears after they enter the lacrimal canaliculi?
They flow into the lacrimal sac, then through the nasolacrimal duct, and finally into the nasal cavity.
Why does your nose run when you cry?
Tears drain from the eye through the lacrimal canaliculi, into the lacrimal sac, and then into the nasal cavity through the nasolacrimal duct.
What is the summary statement for the external anatomy of the eye?
The special senses include sight, hearing, smell, taste, and balance because they have sensory receptors in localized areas or organs. The eye is a sensory organ with many structures like the conjunctiva, eyelids, and lacrimal glands that keep it lubricated and protected from infection.
