1. postsynaptic cell receives many inputs

2. inputs can be excitatroy or inhibitory

3. postysnaptic receptors can be ionotropic or metabotropic

4. presynaptic cells can have various neurotransmitters

5. presynapstic inputs are generally weak

   1. such that it takes many excitatory inputs to generate an action potential in the postsynaptic cell
