Homeostasis
The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment
Gain
The capability of a body system to correct a disturbance
Steady State
A physiological variable that is steady or unchanged
Adaptation
Structural and functional changes that occur in response to a continued stressor
Positive Feedback
The body's ability to restore homeostasis by reinforcing the stimulus
Negative Feedback
The body's response to a disruption in homeostasis by reversing the stimulus.
Oxygen consumption (VO2)
The body’s ability to utilize oxygen to convert foodstuffs into energy
Maximal oxygen uptake/consumption (VO2 max)
The most valid measurement of cardiovascular fitness and can be measured using a graded exercise test
Carbon dioxide production (VCO2)
Carbon dioxide is produced inside the cells of the human body as a byproduct of metabolism
Direct calorimetry
An individual’s heat production is measured to determine the metabolic rate
Indirect calorimetry
The use of a gas analyzer to measure the amount of oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced as the body metabolizes foodstuffs
Total Daily Energy Expenditure
The amount of energy, measured in kcals, that someone expends per day
Kilocalorie (kcal)
The unit used to express energy expenditure as well as the energy value of food
