Symbol
When a word/item stands for a bigger idea beyond the literal meaning.
Ex: The dove in the story represent peace.
Symmetry
Balance of words or ideas (i.e. structure or commentary).
Ex: “She loves reading; he loves writing.”
Synonym
A word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word.
Ex: Happy is a synonym for joyful.
Syntax
How words are arranged in a sentence.
Ex: “Running fast, she reached the bus” vs. “She reached the bus running fast.”
Thesis
The central idea being supported throughout a text (with evidence).
Ex: School uniforms should be required becasue they reduced bulling and improve focus.
Tone
The way in which an author uses language to impact the mood/understanding.
Ex: “Oh great, another homework,” she said (annoyed tone).
Transition
A word or phrase that connects one idea to another.
Ex: I was tired; however, I kept studing.
Understatement
Intentionally make a situation seem less important than it really is.
Ex: “It’s just a scratch,” he said breaking his arm.
Unity
Connection to the main idea/thesis/purpose.
Ex: Every paragraph in the essay suppports the idea that excercise improves health.
Verbal Irony
(Sarcasm) saying the opposite of what is intended.
Ex:” Nice job,” I said as Halle dropped her pen.
