Primary Pollutants
Released directly into the lower atmosphere and are toxic.
Secondary Pollutants
Formed by the combination of primary pollutants in the atmosphere or by the interaction of pollutants with water or sunlight.
Six Criteria Pollutants
Pollutants defined by the Clean Air Act monitored by the EPA including NO2, O3, SO2, CO, Pb, and PM.
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
Forms when atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen react at high temperatures; a product of combustion engines and part of the nitrogen cycle.
Ozone (O3)
A secondary pollutant formed through human activity, exists in the troposphere, and is a major component of smog.
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
A colorless gas with a strong smell, respiratory irritant, released during fossil fuel burning.
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
An odorless, colorless gas from incomplete combustion that can starve the body of oxygen.
Lead (Pb)
A particulate that causes cognitive and neurological disorders; formerly in gasoline and paint, currently from industrial smelting.
Particulate Matter (PM)
Small particles of solid or liquid material that can be inhaled and include substances like soot and pollen.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Compounds that turn into gas easily, found in various products like paints, cleaners, and air fresheners.
