endocrine system is composed of
glands which secrete hormones into the bloodstream
pituary
located in the brain
controls growth in children
stimulates ovaries to produce, release eggs and make oestrogen
stimulates testes to make sperm and testosterone
thyroid
uses thyroxine to control rate of metabolism in body
pancreas
controls blood glucose levels
adrenal
adrenaline preps body for stress/ flight or fight response
ovaries
control menstrual cycle and produces oestrogen
testes
involved in production of sperm and produces testosterone
endocrine system uses
hormones which are chemicals carried the bloodstream which act for longer but slow effect
insulin
travels in bloodstream and triggers body cells to take-up glucose from blood also triggers liver and muscle cells to store excess glucose
during puberty
reproductive hormones cause the secondary sex characteristics to develop
follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
causes eggs to mature in ovaries
luteinising hormone (LH)
stimulates release of mature eggs from ovaries
oestrogen
causes uterus lining to thicken
inhibits release of FSH
stimulates release of LH
progesterone
maintains thick uterus lining
inhibits release of FSH and LH
