Mitochondria
Organelles that produce ATP through respiration and regulate metabolic activity.
State 1
Mitochondria alone in the presence of phosphate (P;); indicates initial conditions.
State 2
Low respiration observed after substrate addition due to lack of ADP.
State 3
Addition of limited ADP allowing rapid respiration.
State 4
All ADP converted to ATP, resulting in slowed respiration.
State 5
Anoxia; complete lack of complex 2 activated, indicating cessation of respiration.
Respiration
The biochemical process in which cells convert substrates into energy (ATP) utilizing oxygen.
Anoxia
A condition of oxygen deprivation in the tissue.
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate; the energy currency of the cell.
Substrate
In this context, refers specifically to ADP which drives respiration.
