What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave where the displacement of the medium is in the same direction as, or the opposite direction to, the direction of propagation of the wave.
Example of a longitudinal wave?
Sound waves in the air.
What is a transverse wave?
A wave where the displacement of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Example of a transverse wave?
Electromagnetic waves, such as light, and a wave moving on a string.
