Enviornmental Possiblism
The physical enviornment can impact the ways in which human society develops, however humans can utilize teachnology in order to combat natural limitations
Economic Forces
The cost of land, labor and machinery
Intensive Agriculture
Large amount of labor and/or capital, small plots of land (scarce or expensive), areas with high population density. Ex. Market Gardening, Plantation Ag, Mixed Crop & Livestock, Mediterranean
Extensive Agriculture
Less labor and/or capital, large plots of land (land is plentiful and cheap), located away from major population centers. Ex. Shifting Cultivation, Livestock Ranching, Nomadic Herding, Commericial Grain Farming
Shifting Cultivation
Farmers move from one field to another to clear and fertilize land through slashing and burning vegitation. When soil loses fertility, farmers move to different land and repeat.
Pastoral Nomadism
Nomads move herds to different patures and trade meat, milk, and hides. Rely upon animals for survival, not profit.
Livestock Ranching
Commercial grazing of livestock. Eventually they will be sent to feedlots and then be sent to slaughter.
Commercial Grain Farming
Crops grown primarily for human consumption. Farms sell their output to maufacturers of food products such as breakfast cereals and bread.
Market/Commercial Gardening, Truck Farming
Some of the fruits and vegetables are sold fresh, but most sold to large processors for canning or freezing.
