Wildlife
Free-living, non-domesticated animals including game and non-game species, as well as threatened, endangered, and nuisance species.
Zoo
Confined/exhibited, non-domesticated animals.
Exotic Animals
Confined/owned, non-domesticated 'pets' such as birds, guinea pigs, ferrets, and lizards.
Conservation
An effort to maintain and use natural resources wisely, ensuring availability for future generations.
In Situ Conservation
Conservation of species in their natural habitats.
Ex Situ Conservation
Conservation of species out of their natural habitats (e.g., in zoos).
Endangered Species Act (ESA)
A U.S. law that authorizes the listing of endangered species and prohibits unauthorized taking, possession, or sale of said species.
Lacey Act
Prohibits the transportation of illegally captured wildlife across state lines.
Animal Welfare Act
U.S. law that regulates the humane treatment and use of warm-blooded animals.
Wildlife Rehabilitation
The care and treatment provided for sick, injured, equipped, or orphaned wildlife with the aim of returning them to the wild.
Species Survival Plan (SSP)
Program that identifies population management goals and aims to maintain healthy, genetically diverse animal populations within AZA zoos.
Stereotypies
Repetitive, apparently functionless behaviors displayed by animals, such as pacing and tongue-rolling.
Endangered
A species that is at serious risk of extinction.
Threatened species
Species that are likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future.
Wildlife Biologist
A professional who studies wildlife and works on conservation efforts.
Zoo Curator
Professionals responsible for all aspects of animal care, collections management, and educating the public in zoos.
AZA
American Zoo and Aquarium Association; an organization that accredits zoos and aquariums according to welfare and conservation standards.
Translocation
Moving individual animals from one location to another for conservation or management purposes.
