Barium thick and/or thin –depending on RAD
•E-Z Gas crystals into medicine cup
•2nd medicine cup with little water to wash crystals down

Describe the procedure for an
esophagram as if you were telling the
patient
Ask patient history
▪ You will be standing up with your back against the table. Take the
crystals and throw them to the back of your throat. Chase the crystals
down with water, this will create gas in your stomach please try not to
burp. Take the cup of thick barium into your left hand, up by your
shoulder. The doctor will tell you when to drink. During the exam you
will be standing, lying down and turning from your stomach to your back
on the table. After the radiologist is done with his/her part of the exam, I
will take some additional images.
