A small device that connects to a computer.
Cable modem
A device that allows access to high-speed Internet services through the cable television network.
Fixed wireless
High-speed Internet connections that use an antenna on a house or business to communicate with a tower via radio signals.
Satellite modem
A device that communicates with a satellite dish to provide high-speed Internet connections.
Wi-Fi network
A wireless network that allows users to connect to high-speed Internet.
DSL
Technology that provides high-speed Internet connection using the telephone network.

Approximately one million characters.

Access provider
A business that provides individuals and companies access to the Internet.
Periods
Separates the components of a domain name.
Web
A worldwide collection of electronic documents.

A collection of related webpages stored on a web server.
Browser
Application software that allows users to access and view webpages.

The creator of the World Wide Web.
Tabbed browsing
Allows users to have multiple home pages that automatically display when the browser runs.
Phishing
A filter that warns or blocks from potentially fraudulent websites.
Proxy
A type of server that screens all incoming and outgoing messages.
Search engine
A program that finds websites and webpages.
Search text
The term for the phrase entered in a search engine's text box.
Hits
The term for the list of webpage names that contain the search text.
Streaming
The process of transferring data in a continuous flow, allowing access to a file while it is transmitting.
Portal
A website that offers a variety of Internet services from a single location.
Web publishing
The development and maintenance of webpages.
Consumer-to-consumer (C2C) e-commerce
Occurs when one consumer sells directly to another consumer.
Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce
Most e-commerce occurs between businesses.
Multimedia
Any application that combines text with graphics, animation, audio, video, and/or virtual reality.
Graphic
A digital representation of nontext information such as a drawing, chart, or photo.
Thumbnail
A small version of a larger graphic on a webpage.
Audio
Includes music, speech, or any other sound.
Media player
Special software needed to listen to an audio file on a computer.
Virtual reality (VR)
The use of computers to simulate a real or imagined environment.
Video
Consists of images displayed in motion.
Plug-in
A program that extends the capability of a browser.
The transmission of messages and files via a computer network.
Email address
Combination of user name and domain name that identifies a user for receiving Internet email.
Email list
A group of email names and addresses used for mass distribution of a message.
Instant messaging (IM)
A real-time Internet communications service allowing users to exchange messages.

The process of transferring files from a computer to a server on the Internet.

The code of acceptable behaviors users should follow while online.
