aorta
The largest artery in the body, which carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
arrhythmia
An irregular heartbeat, which can be too fast, too slow, or erratic.
artifact
A distortion or irregularity in an electrocardiogram (ECG) that is not caused by heart activity.
baseline
The standard level or normal state against which changes in data are measured.
cardiac cycle
The sequence of events that occur during one heartbeat, including contraction and relaxation of heart chambers.
diastole
The phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle relaxes and the chambers fill with blood.
electrocardiogram (ECG)
A recording of the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time.
electrocardiograph
The device that records the electrical activity of the heart.
electrode
A conductor through which electricity enters or leaves a medium, used in ECG to detect electrical activity.
holter monitor
A portable device for continuously monitoring the electrical activity of the heart for 24 hours or more.
hypertension
Abnormally high blood pressure.
hypotension
Abnormally low blood pressure.
interval (in ECG context)
The period of time between specific points on the ECG, indicating the duration of electrical impulses.
myocarditis
Inflammation of the heart muscle.
Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR)
The normal heartbeat rhythm originating from the sinoatrial node.
pacemaker
A device that sends electrical impulses to the heart to maintain a normal heartbeat.
palpitations
The sensation of having a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart.
ECG cycle
The complete sequence of events represented on an electrocardiogram.
segment (in ECG context)
Specific parts of the ECG waveform that represent different phases of cardiac activity.
systole
The phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood.
cardiac output
The amount of blood the heart pumps in a minute.
stroke volume
The volume of blood pumped from the left ventricle of the heart with each heartbeat.
Lead I
An ECG lead that measures the electrical activity between the right arm and left arm.
Lead II
An ECG lead that measures electrical activity between the right arm and left leg.
Lead III
An ECG lead that measures electrical activity between the left arm and left leg.
heated stylus
An instrument used in ECG machines to produce a graphical representation of heart activity.
AVR
A limb lead in an ECG that measures electrical activity as if it is seen from the right arm.
AVL
A limb lead in an ECG that measures electrical activity as if it is seen from the left arm.
AVF
A limb lead in an ECG that measures electrical activity as if it is seen from the left leg.
