Asexual reproduction
A form of reproduction involving one parent that produces offspring identical to the parent.
Sexual reproduction
A form of reproduction that involves the fusion of male and female gametes, resulting in genetically diverse offspring.
Gametogenesis
The process by which gametes (sperm and eggs) are produced in sexually reproducing organisms.
Fertilization
The union of an egg and sperm cell, resulting in the formation of a zygote.
Embryonic development
The series of changes that occur from the fertilization of an egg to the formation of a fully developed organism.
Sex hormones
Hormones that regulate various aspects of reproduction, including development of reproductive structures and functions.
Cleavage
The early cell divisions that occur after fertilization, resulting in a multicellular embryo.
Blastula
An early stage of embryonic development consisting of a hollow ball of cells.
Gastrulation
The process during embryonic development that forms the three germ layers of cells: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
Organogenesis
The process of organ formation during embryonic development.
Gestation
The period of development of the fetus in the womb before birth.
Implantation
The process of the embryo attaching to the wall of the uterus.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
A hormone produced during pregnancy that is released by the placenta and helps maintain the pregnancy.
Oxytocin
A hormone that stimulates uterine contractions during childbirth and helps with lactation.
