Heat Transfer
The study of techniques and methods adopted to transfer heat energy.
Conduction
The method of transfer of heat within a body or from one body to the other due to the transfer of heat by molecules vibrating at their mean positions.
Convection
The mode of heat transfer which occurs mostly in liquids and gases, involving the actual motion of matter from one place within the body to another.
Radiation
A form of heat transfer that does not require any medium and can be used for transfer of heat in a vacuum, using electromagnetic waves.
Kinetic Theory Postulate 1
Gases are made up of molecules separated by large distances, in constant motion.
Kinetic Theory Postulate 2
Collisions between gas particles are perfectly elastic, with no energy loss.
Kinetic Theory Postulate 3
Gas molecules obey Newton’s laws of motion, moving in a straight line unless disturbed.
Kinetic Theory Postulate 4
The volume of gas molecules is negligible compared to the volume of the gas.
Kinetic Theory Postulate 5
The average kinetic energy of gas molecules is directly proportional to absolute temperature.
Calorimeter
Device used to measure the amount of heat transferred between two bodies.
Temperature
How hot or cold an object is; the measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a body.
Heat
Total internal energy of molecules of a substance.
Specific heat capacity
Amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1kg of the material by 1°C.
