Photosynthesis

The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods with the help of carbon dioxide and water.

Control

Aerobic Respiration

A form of respiration that requires oxygen to convert glucose into energy.

Anaerobic Respiration

A form of respiration that occurs without oxygen, typically leading to fermentation.

Phenol Red

A pH indicator that changes color in response to acidity or alkalinity, used in photosynthesis experiments.

Bubbles of Oxygen

Gaseous oxygen released during photosynthesis as a by-product of water splitting.

Sodium Azide

A chemical compound that inhibits cellular respiration by interfering with the electron transport chain.

Dependent Variable

The variable that is measured or tested in an experiment, such as the amount of CO2 generated.

Independent Variable

The variable that is manipulated in an experiment, such as the type of respiratory fuel used.

Fermentation

A metabolic process that converts sugars to acids, gases, or alcohol in the absence of oxygen.

Reciprocal Reactions

Processes such as respiration and photosynthesis that depend on the products and substrates of each other.

Simple Carbohydrate

A type of carbohydrate consisting of a single sugar molecule or two sugar molecules linked together; glucose is an example.

Energy Source

Any material or substance that can be converted to energy through metabolic processes.
