What are the types of movements for the vertebral column?
Flexion, Extension, Lateral Flexion, Rotation
What factors influence movements of the vertebral column?
Size of intervertebral discs, size of vertebral bodies, and direction of articular facets
What movements occur at the Atlantooccipital Joints?
Flexion/Extension and Minor lateral flexion
What movements occur at the Atlantoaxial Joint?
Rotation and Minor flexion/extension
What movements primarily occur at the C3-C7 Joints?
Lateral flexion and Minor flexion/extension
What factors limit movement in the Thoracic region?
Thin IVDs, flat vertebral bodies, ribs restrict motion, and coronal (frontal) facing facets
What movement primarily occurs in the Thoracic region?
Rotation
What features allow for high mobility in the Lumbar region?
Large discs, large curved bodies, and sagittal facing facets
What movements primarily occur in the Lumbar region?
Flexion/Extension and Lateral Flexion
What are the attachments of the Thoracolumbar Fascia?
Sacrum, Ilium, SP and TP of lumbar vertebrae
The muscles of the superficial back act upon what body part?
Upper extremity
What innervates the superficial back muscles?
Cranial nerve or a ventral rami (named nerves)
What innervates the true (deep or intrinsic) back muscles?
Segmental dorsal rami
What are the superficial layer muscles of the true (deep or intrinsic) back muscles?
Splenius and Erector Spinae
What are the deep layer muscles of the true (deep or intrinsic) back muscles?
Transversospinalis group and Suboccipital region
What are the actions of the Splenius muscles?
Bilaterally extends; unilaterally ipsilateral rotation and lateral flexion
What are the three groups of longitudinal muscles of the Erector Spinae?
Iliocostalis, Longissimus, and Spinalis
Unilateral contraction of the Erector Spinae causes what movement?
Lateral flexion
What muscles make up the Transversospinalis group?
Semispinalis, Multifidis, Rotatores Longus & Rotatores Brevis
What are the actions of the Transversospinalis muscles?
Bilaterally extends the vertebral column. Unilaterally rotates the vertebral column to the contralateral side
Where are Interspinales muscles found?
Cervical & Lumbar regions
Where are Intertransversarii muscles found?
Between transverse processes
What are the contents of the Suboccipital Region?
Atlas, Axis, Suboccipital muscles, Vertebral artery, Dorsal Rami of C1, Dorsal Rami of C2
What movements do the Suboccipital muscles produce?
Extension comes from all except obliquus capitis inferior. Rotation comes from Obliquus capitis inferior and Rectus capitis posterior major
What is the function of the Suboccipital nerve (Dorsal ramus of C1)?
Motor ONLY to suboccipital muscles
What is the function of the Greater Occipital nerve (Dorsal ramus of C2)?
Motor to deep back muscles around C2 AND sensory to entire region
