Phylum Annelida
Segmented worms including earthworms and leeches, characterized by a coelomate body plan and segmentation.
Coelomate
An organism with a true coelom, a body cavity completely lined with mesodermal tissue.
Pseudocoelomate
An organism that has a body cavity known as a pseudocoelom, which is not entirely lined by mesoderm.
Ecdysis
The process of molting or shedding the outer covering, characteristic of Nematoda and arthropods.
Setae
Small, bristle-like appendages found on annelids, serving various functions such as anchoring during locomotion.
Trochophore
A free-living larval stage in some protostomes, notably in annelids and mollusks.
Clitellum
A thickened, glandular section of the body wall in annelids, important for reproduction.
Nematoda
A phylum of unsegmented worms known as roundworms, which include significant parasites.
Species richness of Phylum Annelida
Includes over 20,000 named species, such as earthworms and polychaetes.
Trichinella spiralis
A parasitic roundworm that causes trichinosis in humans, often contracted through undercooked pork.
Ascaris lumbricoides
A common human intestinal roundworm that can cause significant health issues.
Hirudinea
A class of annelids commonly known as leeches, primarily found in freshwater.
Polychaeta
A class of annelids that are primarily marine and have many bristles, known for their parapodia.
Digestive tract components in Annelida
Includes pharynx, esophagus, crop, gizzard, and intestine, each specialized for specific functions.
Heartworms
Parasites transmitted by mosquitoes that reside in the heart and lungs of dogs and cats.
Pinworms
Intestinal parasites that commonly infect children, leading to irritation and reinfection through scratching.
