Adroit

Having skill and ability in handling situations or tasks. An "adroit" individual is quick, resourceful, and skilled in dealing with complex challenges.

ex: Since she was adroit in writing classical poetry styles such as the Shakespearean sonnet, they tried challenging her with a teleological-themed poem this time.

Analogous

Having similarities or showing a relationship between two different things, often used in comparison to highlight points of similarity. Similar but not identical.

ex: My teacher’s upbeat tune in the classroom was analogous to the cartoon I was watching on that plane—aka SpongeBob.

Avarice

Extreme greed for wealth or material gain, often at the expense of ethical considerations. A person exhibiting avarice tends to be excessively desirous of accumulating riches.

ex: The monarchs during the renaissance period became so greedy and full of avarice that they stared ridiculous things like the encomienda system colonized vast territories of the indigenous population.

Bog

Marsh, swamp, wet, muddy ground too soft to support a heavy body; cause to become stuck in mud or wet ground

ex: My sleep schedule has been bogged down heavily by the heavy homework loads and amount of tests dumped down on me since the start of the semester.

in order to get past the bridge and get to Helen’s house, we needed to somehow pass through that bog.

Compliant

Yielding to request or desire, ready to accommodate, disposed or willing to comply. Conforming to requests.

ex: My friend was so compliant to her roommate last year she never once got to choose the temperature, the noise level, or lights-out times for their room.

Destitute

extremely poor, utterly lacking, without the basic necessities of life

ex: After the sway of the Bubonic plague, Europe was swept into the Dark Ages for a long period of time before the adroit philosophical thinkers bounced back to bring in the Renaissance.

Deterrent

A measure or device that discourages actions or behaviors by instilling fear or doubt.

ex: As we walked into the final room of the escape rooms, I really tried to keep my composure at the deterrent, artificial howls and screams behind the final door.

Dupe

deceive, trick. easily deceived person.

ex: The teachers were easily duped into thinking he did the homework when he turned in a picture of those teachers.

Encumbrance

A burden or hindrance that interferes with progress or action.

ex: The excessive encumbrance on my shoulder was metaphorical—I did not have some huge backpack whatsoever behind me……I was talking about my diminishing health and lack of sleep.

Eulogy

A speech or tribute given in honor of someone who has passed away, often reflecting on their life and achievements.

ex: At the funeral of that rich man, a lady, in clicking high heels, bright-pink lipstick, and an extravagant outfit stood in the corner, waiting for her turn to deliver her eulogy.

Folly

a lack of good sense or foolishness, often leading to poor decisions.

ex: the baseball players were folly enough to walk into that burger store after practice—no, they did not know how the owner of that store was reported on the New York Times just yesterday for being a fraud full of avarice.

Insolence

Rude or disrespectful behavior, often marked by a lack of regard for authority.

ex: I really do think students nowadays show much more insolence towards things than we did when we were their age—I would never have thought about talking back at my teacher!
