Die Lotosblume Ängstigt

The lotus-flower is afraid

Sich vor der Sonne Pracht

of the sun’s radiance

Und mit gesenktem Haupte

and with bowed head

Er wartet, sie träumend die Nacht

dreaming, awaits it the night

Der Mond, der ist ihr Buhle,

The moon, who is her lover,

Er weckt sie mit seinem licht,

it awakens her with its light,

Und ihm entschleiert sie freundlich

and for-him unveils (unvails) she obligingly

Ihr frommes (holdes) Blumengesicht

her innocent (lovely) flower-like face

Sie blüht und glüht und leuchtet

She blooms and glows and shines

Und Starret Stumm in die Höhˋ

and gazes silently into the sky

Sie duftet und weinet und zittert

it sends forth-fragrance and weeps and trembles

Vor Liebe und Liebesweh

with love and love’s pain.
