Atria
receive blood from the body and lungs, pushing it into the ventricles
Ventricle
pump blood out of the heart to the lungs and body
Tricuspid valve
has 3 flaps, blood flows from the RA to the RV but not backwards
Bicuspid (mitral) valve
2 flaps, blood flows from LA to LV but not backwards
Systolic
highest # when ventricles contract
Diastolic
lowest # when ventricles relax
Heart attack
heart continues beating, a circulation problem, blocked artery: prevents O2 from myocardium
Cardiac arrest
heart stops beating, an electrical problem, irregular heartbeat: fibrillation
Pericarditis
Inflammation results in increased production of fluid restricting heart movement
Myocardium
heart muscle
Arteries
carry high-pressure, oxygenated blood away from the heart to tissues
Veins
return low-pressure, deoxygenated blood to the heart, using valves to prevent backflow
Stroke
Aneurysm in the brain
Aneurysm
A bulge in the weakened wall of a blood vessel (usually an artery) or heart chamber
Bainbridge Reflex
When the pressure of blood increases in the RA, it causes the heart rate to increase
Describe heart features specific to fetal circulation and function
Foramen ovale
Ductus arteriosus
What creates the “lub” “dub” sound of the heart?
Lub- when tricuspid and bicuspid (mitral) valves close
Dub- semilunar valves close
Describe how the heartbeat is controlled
The heartbeat is controlled by an electrical conduction system that initiates and spreads impulses through the heart muscle, conveys impulse from the AV node to the Purkinje fibers
What is an ECG and the P, QRS, & T parts to it?
ECG- Measurement of the heart’s electrical activity
P wave- when atria contract
QRS- ventricles contract
T wave- recovery of ventricles
What is normal blood pressure and its danger levels?
120/80
Hypotension: <90/<60
Hypertension: >140/>90
3 health problems from having high blood pressure.
heart attack, stroke, kidney failure
