Integumentary system functions
Protects the body, regulates temperature, provides sensation, stores nutrients, and contributes to immunity.
Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin composed of stratified squamous epithelium.
Stratum basale
Innermost layer of the epidermis where new epidermal cells are formed.
Dermis
Inner layer of skin that contains collagen and elastic fibers, sensory receptors, and adipose tissue.
Hypodermis
Subcutaneous layer that attaches skin to underlying tissues and provides insulation.
Pigments determining skin color
Three pigments are melanin (brown), carotene (yellow), and hemoglobin (red).
Melanocytes
Cells producing melanin that contribute to skin color.
Ultraviolet radiation protection
Melanin protects skin against damage from UV radiation.
Ultimate determiner of skin color
Genetics is the ultimate factor determining skin color.
Stratum corneum
Outermost layer of the epidermis formed of dead keratinized cells.
