American Exceptionalism
The idea that America has a mission to spread freedom and democracy across the world

Period of artistic expression which emphasized pride in black culture
Hoovervilles
Areas lived in by unemployed homeless people during the Great Depression
Internment Camps

Great Plains farmers who moved to California during the Dust Bowl
Pearl Harbor
US naval base located in Hawaii which was attacked by Japan and began US participation in WWII
Progressive Era
Early nineteenth century period where the middle class demanded the government regulation of business and an increase in democracy
Red Scare
Post WWI fear caused by the Bolshevik Revolution which led to the belief that America would be taken over by Communists
Roosevelt Corollary
An addition to the Monroe Doctrine which stated that the US will intervene in weak Latin American countries
Rosie the Riveter
Nickname for women who worked in the defense industry during WWII
Schenck v US
Supreme Court case stating that Congress has the power to limit freedom of speech during times of war
Spanish-American War
War caused in part by yellow journalism and resulted in the American acquisition of many islands
Yalta Conference
Meeting of the Allied Powers to make post-war plans such as the division of Germany and the creation of the United Nations
Wagner Act
New Deal law which guaranteed a worker's right to join a union and collectively bargain

Constitutional provision which granted women's suffrage in the United States
