O-H spectrum details
broad dip
smooth sweeping line, not jagged (like C-H)
C-H spectrum details
more jaggedy lies in dip, not smooth
can be hidden/masked by other functional groups (e.g. broad O-H)
Aldehyde/ketone vs carboxylic acid spectra
both have C=O bond but aldehyde/ketone WON’T have smooth, broad O-H dip, unlike carboxylic acid (COOH)
Fingerprint region purpose
Region below 1500cm-1
Unique to EVERY molecule
Infrared spectrometers can use this region and search in large spectra database to identify molecule
Alcohol spectra
Carboxylic acid spectra
Aldehyde/ketone spectra
