FIRST TRUE STEP
Prepare and open all supplies. Ensure that tubes are in the correct order.
Light Blue > Red > Yellow > Green > Lavender > Gray

1.
Review the physician’s order to to determine patient and type of blood test.

Obtain the requisition and compare it to the physician’s order.
3.
Greet the patient.
4.
Ask them to state full name and spell it out. Then ask them to state their date of birth.
Inform the patient about the procedure that will be performed and obtain consent.

Ask the patient to ensure that any required special conditions have been met. Then ask about allergies and sensitivities.

Don gloves

Apply a tourniquet
9.
Palpate with index finger for a suitable vein. Then, release the tourniquet
10.
Swab the site with an alcohol swab
11.
While allowing the alcohol to dry, attach the system (if applicable).
12.
Uncap and inspect the needle, making sure to position the bevel facing up.
13.
Insert the needle at an angle between 15 and 30 degrees, piercing the skin in as swift, continuous motion.
14.
Use index and middle finger on your right hand to gently keep the needle in place.
15.
Use your left hand to push the tube onto the needle carefully.
16.
Fill the tube to the appropriate level and then gently remove the needle from the tube, invert the tube 2-3 times and then set it aside. Repeat this process for all the tubes.
17.
Release the tourniquet as soon as the last tube begins filling.
18.
After filling all tubes, obtain gauze and hover it over the needle as you remove it. Then, firmly press the gauze on the site.
19.
Throw away the blood collection kit.
20.
Tape the gauze. Instruct the patient to leave the gauze on for at least 15 minutes and avoid significantly bending the arm in that time.
21.
Label the specimen then check with patient for accuracy.
22.
Thank the patient for coming and tell them that the doctor will get back to them on the results.
23.
Remove PPE and wash hands.
