Iconoclastic Struggles
A conflict between iconoclasts and iconodules over religious icon illustrations. 700s, 800sCE. Byzantine Empire. Began due to two emperors Leo III and Leo V who thought the clergy was too powerful, so they conspired against religious icons, wanting to destroy them all to reduce the clergy’s influence.
Anna Comnena
Daughter of Alexis I Commenus. 1000sCE. Byzantine Empire. Wrote the book Alexiad about her father’s reign, becoming a primary source of information about the Byzantine empire and providing accounts of the First Crusade from their perspective.
