Decreased neuropathic pain or seizures
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of action is unknown. It is structurally similar to GABA, but does not act on GABA receptors or influence GABA.
Indications
Gabapentin is used for partial seizures and neuropathic pain.
Nursing Considerations Across the Lifespan
Use in pediatric patients with epilepsy, 3-12, is associated with the occurrence of central nervous system-related adverse events
This drug can cause harm to the fetus of pregnant women.
In elderly patients, peripheral edema and ataxia tended to increase in incidence with age.
Adverse effects
Increased suicidal ideation
Immediately report fever, rash, and/or lymphadenopathy
CNS depression: dizziness, somnolence, and ataxia
Client teaching
Wear an emergency ID tag
Avoid driving and activities that require alertness
Patients, family, and caregivers should also monitor for
suicidality.
Taper dose; do not stop abruptly
