Four periods of Psychosexual development

• Infantile

• Latency

• Genital

• Maturity

Freud divided the infantile period into three phases according to primary erogenous zones that are developing

• Oral

• Anal

• Phallic

The phallic phase under the infantile period is divided again into two complexes due to the anatomical differences between boys and girls

• Male Oedipus Complex

• Female Oedipus Complex (Electra Complex)

Origin of Oedipus complex

Freud got it from the Greek tragedy of Sophocles where Oedipus Rex murdered his father and married his mother

Infantile Period

is a childhood sexual life differs from adult sexuality, not capable of reproduction and autoerotic

Oral phase

The first infantile stage (Age 1) because the mouth is the first organ to provide an infant with pleasure.

The infant gains life-sustaining nourishment through oral cavity and also gain pleasure through sucking

The sexual aim of Oral phase

The nipple, it is to incorporate or receive into one’s body the object choice.

Oral-receptive subphase

Is a subphase of the oral phase, which is the sexual aim the drinking of milk through nipple

The infants gain satisfaction/pleasure by

Minimum frustration and anxiety, and during this oral-receptive phase the infants feel no ambivalence toward the pleasurable object

As the infant grow they are more likely experience frustration/anxiety due to

inconsistent feeding by their mother, and these anxieties are generally accompanied by feelings of ambivalence toward their mother

Second oral subphase

Is a subphase of the Oral phase, Freud called this as oral-sadistic phase, during this phase infants respond to others through, biting, cooing, mouth-closing, smiling, and crying.

The oral-sadistic phase is the first form of aggressive drive

Infant’s first autoerotic experience

thumb sucking, it is a defense against anxiety that satisfies their sexual but not their nutritional needs

Anal phase

(Age 1-3)Characterized by satisfaction gained through aggressive behavior and excretory function

Anal-sadistic phase

Anal phase is divided into two subphases

• Early anal subphase

• Late anal subphase

Early anal subphase

During this subphase the children receive satisfaction by destroying or losing objects, the destructive nature of the sadistic drive is stronger than the erotic drive

Children often behave aggressively toward their parents for frustrating them with toilet training

Late anal subphase

During this subphase, children love their shit, this love stems from the erotic pleasure of shitting. Frequently, children will show their shit to their parents as valued prizes.

Late anal subphase, if the shit is accepted and praised by their parents

The children will are likely to grow into a generous and magnanimous adult

Late anal subphase, if the shit is rejected by their parents

The children may adopt another method of obtaining pleasure by withholding their shit until the pressure becomes both painful and erotically pleasure

Anal character

is the result of rejecting the shit, people with this character tends to receive erotic satisfaction by keeping and possessing objects and arranging them in an excessively neat and orderly fashion.

For Freud people gain this character because of overly resistant toilet training during their childhood

Anal triad

Is a set of trait that represents Anal character, orderliness, stinginess, and obstinacy

Oral phase

Phallic Phase

(Age 3-6) genital area becomes the leading erogenous zone, this is the 3rd stage of infantile period

A dichotomy between male and female development

Suppression of Sexual Activity

Parents suppress masturbation by the time phallic phase comes to an end

Male Oedipus complex

Freud believes that preceding the phallic phase the boy wants to become his father and then later develops a sexual desire for his mother. He wants to have his mother

Simple male Oedipus complex

After noticing the boy (ego) realize the inconsistency of these 2 wishes he will stop wishing to become his father and rival his father for his mother’s love/desire.

Bisexuality of the boy and girl

Known as the Complete Oedipus complex, sometimes the child possesses a trait of the opposite sex, and their love and aggression towards their parents change.

For Freud, the Complete Oedipus complex played a role in the evolution of castration anxiety.

Castration Anxiety

Is a boy’s fear of losing his penis, it begins when the boy noticed that the girls don’t have a penis. The boy will conclude that the girl’s penis was cut off as a punishment for sexual activities/desires.

Do all boys experience castration anxiety?

Yes, even if there’s no threat to castrate the boy, any mention of the penis is enough to activate the anxiety due to Phylogenetic Endowment

Successful repression of Oedipus complex

the boy will begin to love his parents, develop primitive superego, and introject to his father. (normal boy)

Female Oedipus complex

Known as the Electra complex, it starts with penis envy. Penis happens when the girl realizes that they don’t have a penis unlike the boy and the girl desire to have one. The girl wants to be a man or wants to have a baby boy with her father or with random dudes to satisfy her desire for a penis

Relationship of the girl to her mother during Female Oedipus complex

At first, the girl has a sexual desire for her mother but later will turn to hostility when the girl blames her mother for bringing her into the world without a penis.

Simple Female Oedipus complex

Is the desire for sexual intercourse with the father and accompanying hostility toward her mother

Sometimes Simple Female Oedipus complex don’t happen and the girls will rebel in of of three ways

1. The simple female Oedipus complex happens.

2. The girl will give up any sexuality (asexual) and develop hatred for her mother

3. the girl will cling to their masculinity and hope for a penis and fantasize to be a man

Successful repression of Female Oedipus complex

This is when the girl stops his sexual desire for her father and starts loving her mother

Latency period

(age 6-puberty) Is a period of dormant psychosexual development, due to parent’s attempts to punish or discourage sexual activity

Genital period

(puberty) Signals are a reawakening of the sexual aim and the start of the genital period. This is where the teenager gives up their primary narcissism and directs their libido to another person.

This period also marks the start of reproduction.

Penis Envy may still linger in girls but the vagina now has the same status the penis have

The boys see the vagina as a sought-off object rather than a source of trauma

Maturity

A stage attained by people who reach physical maturity. It seldom happens because people have too many opportunities to develop pathological disorders or neurotic predispositions

A characteristics of a Freudian mature person

• The ego dominates both Id and Superego

• Consciousness would play a more important role than the unconscious
