HTS (Highway Transportation System)

NHSA (National Highway Safety Act)

NTMVSA (National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act)
Requires auto manufacturers to include safety features like seatbelts in vehicles.
IPDE
An acronym for Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute; a systematic process for managing driving situations.
Open Zone
A space where you can drive without restrictions to your line of sight or intended path.
Closed Zone
A space not open to you because of a restriction in your line of sight or intended path of travel.
Selective Seeing
Identifying and selecting only the clues that can change your intended path of travel.
GDL (Graduated License Program)
A program requiring young drivers to progress through various licensing stages.
Dram Shop Law
Laws holding servers of alcohol liable for damages caused by intoxicated individuals.
Deep Perception
The ability to judge the relative distance of objects correctly.
Zero-Tolerance Law
A law making it illegal for drivers under 21 to have a BAC greater than 0.02.
Regulatory Signs
Signs that set limits, give commands, and control traffic.
Guide Signs
Signs that provide information about routes, destinations, and services.
Traffic Control Officer Signals
Signals given by an officer directing traffic, which must be obeyed over traffic signals or signs.
Yield Sign
A sign indicating that a driver must slow down and check for oncoming traffic.
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)
Lanes designated for buses and carpools with a specific minimum number of passengers.
Roundabout
A circular intersection where traffic moves counterclockwise and drivers must yield to circulating traffic.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
A measure of alcohol in the bloodstream, used to determine legal intoxication.
Right of Way
The privilege to proceed first in traffic situations.
Fresh Green Light
A traffic light that has just changed to green, requiring caution before proceeding.
Lane Position
The positioning of a vehicle within its lane; important for safe maneuvers.
