Why were the colonists angry about having no say in parliament?

Only English MPs had a voice in parliament and the colonists had no voice in parliament. No one would voice out the concerns of the colonists in British parliament.

Why were the colonists angry about taxation?

American colonists were angry that Britain was allowed to tax the colonists even if they were not represented in parliament. The phrase “No taxation without representation”. The british also need money so made the American colonies pay heavy taxes on imports lile tea, and paper.

The American colonists were inspired by enlightenment thinkers such as Locke and Voltaire, so they questioned why parliament should be able to pass laws without their consent.

How did “Common Sense” affect the American colonies?

In 1776, Thomas Paine, a philosopher and writer, wrote a book called ‘Common Sense’. It said that the monarchy was corrupt and called for American Independence. It was widely read and very popular. This made the American colonies very angry and many agreed with the book.

The British army had fired on some anti-British colonists. This was known as the Boston Massacre. It enraged the Amercans that the British would choose violence rather than sit down and negotiate with the Americans.

The 1765 stamp act was a heavy tax on every sheet of every legal document. As a result, Americans boycotted British goods and were further enraged by these unnecessary taxes.

Why were the colonists angry about The Intolerable Acts?

The 1774 Intolerable acts were a set of strict laws that gave the British a sense of more control over the colonies. They closed down Boston harbour until the colonists paid for all the tea that was lost at Boston Tea Party. They forbade any meetings without the governor’s permission and they made the colonists house and feed British troops.
