Kinship

The web of social relationships that humans form as a part of a family.

Family

A social and economic unit that consists of one or more parents and their children.

Nuclear Family

A family composed of a husband, wife, and their children in a union recognized by society.

Family of Orientation

The nuclear family that an individual is born into.

Family of Procreation

The nuclear family that an individual marries into.

Extended Family

A type of family composed of two or more nuclear families relating to each other economically and socially.

Reconstituted Family

A family formed when previously married individuals remarry and combine children from past marriages.

Patrilocal Residence

A residence pattern where the newly married couple lives with or near the husband's family.

Matrilocal Residence

A residence pattern where the newly married couple lives with or near the wife's family.

Bilocal/Ambilocal Residence

A residence option where newlywed couples can choose to live with either set of parents.

Neolocal Residence

A residence pattern that allows the newlywed couple to live independently from both sets of parents.

Avuncular Residence

A residence pattern where the couple lives with or near the husband's maternal uncle.

Natalocal Residence

A residence pattern that allows spouses to remain in their own households after marriage.

Patrilineal Descent

A descent system that affiliates a person with relatives through their father.

Matrilineal Descent

A descent system that affiliates a person with relatives through their mother.

Bilateral Descent

A descent system that affiliates a person with relatives through both parents.

Patriarchal Family

A family structure where authority is vested in the oldest male member.

Matriarchal Family

A family structure where authority is held by the mother or her kin.

Equalitarian Family

A family structure where both husband and wife exercise equal authority.

Monogamy

A marital practice permitting a person to have only one spouse at a time.

Polygamy

A marriage practice that involves multiple spouses, including polyandry and polygyny.

Polyandry

A type of marriage in which a woman has multiple husbands.

Polygyny

A type of marriage in which a man has multiple wives.

Political Dynasty

Continuous political rule of one family.

Compadrazgo System

A system that creates political alliances based on pseudo-kinship rather than political ideologies.
