KINSHIP AND FAMILIES


KINSHIP

  • Refers to the web of social relationships that humans form as a part of a family, which is the smallest unit of society 


FAMILY

  • A social and economic unit that consists of one or more parents and their children (Ferraro and Adreatta, 2010)


CHARACTERISTICS OF A FAMILY 


  1. The family must have at least one child 

  2. A family can have one or more parents 

  3. A family can have parents who are not married 

  4. A family can have parents with the same sex 

  5. A fanily is a socioeconomic unit, meaning they can depend on each other. 


CLASSIFICATIONS OF FAMILY


NUCLEAR FAMILY

  • This classification of a family is composed of a husband, wife, and their children in a union recognized by the society. 

  • Any individual belongs to two kinds of families under this: family or orientation or family of procreation 


FAMILY OF ORIENTATION

  • The kind of nuclear family wherein an individual is born into that family 


FAMILY OF PROCREATION

  • The kind of nuclear family wherein in individual marries into a certain family


EXTENDED FAMILY

  • This type of family is composed of two or more nuclear families relating to each other economically and socially


RECONSTITUTED FAMILY

  • This type of family occurs when the current spouses were previously married and had children, and upon the dissolution of their previous marriages, these individuals remarried and created a new family by bringing their children from their past marriages and birthing their own. 


PATRILOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to residence requires that a newly married couple live with family of the husband or near the residence of the parents of the husband. 


MATRILOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to place of residence requires that a newlywed couple live with or near the residence of the wife’s parents. 


BILOCAL/AMBILOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to place of residence allows newlywed couples select where to reside, however, still dependent on their parents (either with, or near one of their parents)


NEOLOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to residence permits the newlywed couple to reside independently of their parents. 


AVUNLOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to residence prescribes that the newlywed couple resde with or near the maternal uncle of the husband. 


NATALOCAL RESIDENCE

  • This type of family according to residence allows the newlywed spouses to remain in their own households after the marriage. 


PATRILINEAL DESCENT

  • Affiliates a person with a group or relatives related to them through their father 


MATRILINEAL DESCENT

  • Affiliates a person with a group of kinsmen related to them through their mother


BILATERAL DESCENT

  • Affiliates a person with a group of kinsmen related to them through both their father and their mother



PATRIARCHAL FAMILY

  • This type of family has the authority vested in the oldest male member, often the father, grandfather, oldest brother, etc. 


MATRIARCHAL FAMILY

  • This type of family has the authority vested in the mother or the mother’s kin.


EQUALITARIAN

  • This type of famly according to authority is wherein the husband and wife exercise a more or less equal amount of authority. 


MONOGAMY

  • Permits the man to only have one spouse at a time


POLYGAMY 

  • Is a plural marriage, assumes any one: polyandry and polygny


POLYANDRY

  • Type of marriage where the woman marries multiple husbands


POLYGYNY

  • Type of marriage wherein the man marries multiple wives.

POLITICAL DYNASTY

  • Refers to the continuous political rule of one family 


COMPADRAZGO SYSTEM

  • This system created political alliances that aren’t based on on political idealogies but more on pseudo kinship
