Action Potential
A temporary change in electrical potential that propagates along the axon to transmit signals.
Axon Terminal
The endpoint of an axon where neurotransmitter release occurs.
Synaptic Cleft
The small gap between the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons where neurotransmitters diffuse.
Exocytosis
The process by which vesicles release their contents, such as neurotransmitters, into the synaptic cleft.
Voltage Gated Calcium Channels
Channels that open in response to an action potential, allowing calcium ions to enter the axon terminal.
Fast Pain
A sharp, quick pain sensation often associated with injuries like paper cuts.
Slow Pain
A dull, throbbing pain sensation that is perceived differently from fast pain.
Neurotransmitter
Chemical messengers released from neurons that transmit signals across the synaptic cleft.
Calcium Ions
Positively charged ions that, when influxed into the neuron, trigger the release of neurotransmitters.
Postsynaptic Cell
The neuron or cell that receives the neurotransmitter from the synaptic cleft.
